Team Building Activity Idea: Virtual Escape Rooms
Now more than ever, people are working remotely. As a company, you’re no longer restricted only to employees in your area. Many are hiring talent from all over the world. At first glance, it may seem like team building activities are no longer possible, but building those relationships and connections are vital to the health of a team!
While The Escape Game began as an in-person-only adventure, we saw the need to get creative and expand. From that desire came Remote Adventures, or, virtual escape rooms. You can now plan an epic, creative team building activity even when you can’t all be together physically!
Why Remote Adventures?
Anyone who has led a team knows the importance of team building activities. But with so many working remotely, it’s become really hard to find creative and engaging ways to build the strength and togetherness of teams. We’re pumped to offer our virtual escape rooms to solve this problem.
Remote Adventures bring unique and valuable advantages to the table:
- Collaboration: You will only succeed in an escape room if you work together as a team. The same is true in the workplace. It’s vital for team members to work together to accomplish goals. Even further, so much of the workplace is happening virtually now. This is a great opportunity for your team to not only learn how to work together in general, but specifically how to collaborate virtually.
- Creativity: Isn’t it true that the most successful businesses rely on creative and innovative teams? Sometimes your team just needs something to get those creative juices flowing. What better way to expand the imagination than treasure hunting, breaking out of prison, or taking part in a heist? Remote Adventures will help your team open up their imaginations and come up with the next big idea!
- Flexibility: Many team-building activities either need to be in person or can only accommodate a certain amount of people. It doesn’t matter if you’re a group of 5 or 500, we have space for you. It doesn’t matter if you’re in the same building or spread across the globe, we have the capacity to meet your needs!
- Fun: Let’s have fun! We know team building is vital, but we also know people tend to check out if they aren’t fully engaged. The Escape Game is known for creating epic adventures. With thousands of 5-star reviews, you can know your team will have fun! Remote Adventures isn’t your average team building activity. It’s an adventure that will transport you to another time and place!
Prepare for the Experience
Let’s set the stage for what your virtual escape room will feel like.
We’ve set everything up for you, and send you the meeting link 24–48 hours before your game starts. While other companies may be doing regular meetings today, your team is amped about their adventure! You log into Remote Adventures through Zoom and you’re greeted by your host as they set the stage for your mission. They’ll be there through the whole experience to offer clues and hints. Next, you meet your game guide. They will be your eyes, ears, and feet in the physical room, streaming live. You say, “Game guide, look up,” they look up. You say, “Game guide, looks left,” they look left.
One side of your screen shows you and your team members, the other side of the screen is your dashboard. You take a look and watch your mission video to find out what your team needs to accomplish in the next 60 minutes. Sit back and be transported to a different world. One where you’re not sitting on a chair, but where you’re on a mission to find treasure, break out of prison, or even participate in a heist! Once you’ve watched that, you have access to 3D scans of each room, so you can take a closer look at your environment.
One of the most important parts of the game is your inventory! Any of the clues you find throughout the game will be put in your inventory, which is on your dashboard. You can take a closer look at anything in your inventory.
You spend the next 60 minutes feeling the thrill of uncovering clues! You and your team work together to figure out how to solve the puzzles and figure out what they mean in the bigger picture of the game. There are times you get stuck on a particular puzzle. Maybe you figure it out on your own, maybe your host offers a hint. Either way, overcoming challenges is all part of Remote Adventures. You and your team are pushed into collaborating as you each find different clues and offer up your particular skills! There are moments of intensity as the clock ticks down to your final minutes.
You complete your mission! Congratulations! Let’s take a group picture so everyone can remember the thrill of the game.
Ins and Outs of Remote Adventures
If you’ve ever been to The Escape Game in-person, you may have some questions about how Remote Adventures will work. Let’s get straight to it and answer a few questions:
Q: What is a virtual escape room?
A: Virtual escape rooms work the same as traditional escape rooms, where you have 60 minutes to complete your mission. The difference is that you’ll be viewing the room through a live-camera feed, operated by a game guide. On your screen, you’ll have a dashboard where you’ll watch your mission video, see 3D scans of the rooms, and keep track of your inventory throughout the game. With the help of your game guide and dashboard, you and your team will work together to find clues, solve puzzles, and complete your mission!
Q: How big or small does a group need to be to book an event?
A: The size of groups can vary greatly. Whether you’re a group of 5 or 500, we’ve got you covered.
Q: Do we have to be together?
A: No! One of the best things about Remote Adventures is that you can play even when scattered across the globe.
Q: How does pricing work?
A: The pricing is $30-35 per player. So, if you have two players on the same computer, you still pay per player rather than per computer.
Q: How do the teams work?
A: Every large group gets split into teams of 8. We can do this randomly or you can choose how you want your teams to be split. You may decide you want to mix up your teams, so people who don’t normally work together will play on the same team. Or you may want to go really competitive and make it department vs department, so teams can sharpen their communication skills.
Q: Do we still get to take a team photo?
A: Yes! We know it’s always great to commemorate an experience, so we’ll take a group photo at the end and send it to each player.
Q: What software do you use?
A: Zoom is our default platform, but if your team is comfortable with another software, we are happy to make that work as well.
Q: Do all the games start at the same time?
A: Yes! We have an upgrade called Custom Start Times, which ensures the games start at the same time. Even without that, we can do our best to start games within 5–10 minutes of each other.
